Area with Polar Coordinates — In this section we will discuss how to the area enclosed by a polar curve. Cylindrical Coordinates — In this section we will define the cylindrical coordinate system, an alternate coordinate system for the three dimensional coordinate system. The topics covered are a brief review of arithmetic with complex numbers, the complex conjugate, modulus, polar and exponential form and computing powers and roots of complex numbers.
We will derive formulas to convert between cylindrical coordinates and spherical coordinates as well as between Cartesian and spherical coordinates the more useful of the two.
A proof of the Integral Test is also given. This includes a working knowledge of differentiation and integration. Parametric Equations and Curves — In this section we will introduce parametric equations and parametric curves i. Not all the topics covered in an Algebra or Trig class are covered in this review.
It it still geared mostly towards Calculus students with occasional comments on how a topic will be used in a Calculus class. The Alternating Series Test can be used only if the terms of Sor ii paul notes series alternate in sign.
This is somewhat related to the previous three items, but is important enough to merit its own item. The Root Test can be used on any series, but unfortunately will not always yield a conclusive answer as to whether a series will converge absolutely or diverge.
There is also a page of common algebra errors included. Quadric Surfaces — In this section we will be looking at some examples of quadric surfaces. Sequences — In this section we define just what we mean by sequence in a math class and give the basic notation we will use with them.
We will look at some standard 3D surfaces and their equations. This portion of the site should be of interest to anyone looking for common math errors. We also discuss differentiation and integration of power series.
Graphing particular types of equations is covered extensively in the notes, however, it is assumed that you understand the basic coordinate system and how to plot points. We will illustrate how partial sums are used to determine if an infinite series converges or diverges.

We will also see how we can use the first few terms of a power series to approximate a function. The Calculus I portion of many of the problems tends to be skipped and left to the student to verify or fill in the details. We discuss whether a sequence converges or diverges, is increasing or decreasing, or if the sequence is bounded.
The other version is a reduced version that contains exactly the same information as the full version except it has just been shrunk down so two pages print of the front and two pages print on the back of a single piece of paper.
Series — The Basics — In this section we will formally define an infinite series. Determining if they have finite values will, in fact, be one of the major topics of this section. We also give a derivation of the integration by parts formula.
Strategy for Series — In this section we give a general set of guidelines for determining which test to use in determining if an infinite series will converge or diverge. Included are common notation for vectors, arithmetic of vectors, dot product of vectors and applications and cross product of vectors and applications.
